Las Vegas Facts

Las Vegas is one of the most popular destinations, not only in the United States, but in the entire world. With all the attractions, from casinos and nightlife to Hoover Dam, there is good reason for this. But, here are 7 things you don't know about Las Vegas.

  1. Las Vegas is the most highly populated city in America that was founded in the 1900s.

  2. The name "Las Vegas" translates to mean "The Meadows".

  3. Gambling was legalized in 1931 and Hoover Dam was completed in 1936.

  4. Between 1990 and 2000, the population of Las Vegas came close to doubling.

  5. Though no professional major league teams call Las Vegas home due to its association with sports betting, the city did host the 2007 NBA All-Star Game.

  6. The famous Flamingo Hotel, built by legendary gangster Bugsy Siegel, was opened on the street that would later become known as the Las Vegas Strip in December of 1946.

The first of the megaresorts to be opened in Las Vegas was The Mirage in 1989.

With all the nightlife available, from the megaresort casinos on the strip to the old Las Vegas look of the Fremont District, Las Vegas provides vacation getaways like no other city. It will continue to be one of the most traveled to destinations for quite some time.

Las Vegas is a city much like many others around the country, with quality schools and institutions of higher learning, houses of worship, libraries, fine restaurants and enriching cultural events. Friendly people, abundant and affordable housing and a wide array of year-round recreational opportunities also make Las Vegas a great place not just to work, but also to live and play.
